iWork

iWork is Apple's productivity software and consists of three components: Keynote for creating presentations, Numbers for creating spreadsheets, and Pages for creating word processed documents, brochures, posters, etc.

Compatibility

MS Office: Files created with MS Office are compatible with iWork (they must be opened from within iWork). iWork files can be exported as Powerpoint, Excel, and Word documents.

Appleworks: There are four main types of Appleworks documents — database, draw, spreadsheet, and word processing.

Word Processed and Spreadsheet Documents: Simply open the document from the File menu within the appropriate program (Pages or Numbers).

    1. Open Pages or Numbers
    2. "Choose File > Open
    3. Select the document, and then click Open.

Draw Documents: At this time, Apple does not have any support for opening these documents. You have two options.

Option #1: Move your work from Draw into Word Processing and then open with Pages. You'll be able to edit your work.

    1. Open the Draw document
    2. Select all items (Apple-a)
    3. Copy
    4. Open an AppleWorks word processing document
    5. Select the pointer tool
    6. Paste
    7. Save the document
    8. Open the document from within Pages.

Option #2: Save the Draw documents as PDFs. This way, you will still be able to open and print them, however you won't be able to make any changes.

    1. Select File/Print...
    2. Click the PDF button
    3. Select Save as PDF...
    4. Name and save your file for future usePrint to PDF

 

 

Databases: At this time, Apple does not have any support for opening these documents. However, you can turn it into a spreadsheet and open it with Numbers.

Part 1:

  1. Open the Database
  2. Select File/Save as...
  3. Click the File Format drop down menu
  4. Select ASCII Text
  5. Click the Save button; be sure to note where you saved the file
  6. Close the Database

Part 2:

  1. Open the new file you just created; it will open as a spreadsheet
  2. Select File/Save as...
  3. Click the File Format drop down menu
  4. Select AppleWorks
  5. Click the Save button; be sure to note where you saved the file
  6. Close the spreadsheet

Part 3: Open in Numbers as listed above.
